Air India Flight to London Crashes After Takeoff from Ahmedabad, 242 People Onboard

KKN Gurugram Desk | In a major aviation disaster, an Air flight bound for London crashed just moments after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International  in Ahmedabad. The tragic incident occurred near the Meghaninagar area, approximately 15 kilometers from the airport. A total of 242 people were onboard, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, when the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad occurred.

Crash Timeline: Just Two Minutes After Takeoff

According to initial reports, the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating on an international route from Ahmedabad to London, took off at 1:38 PM IST. However, within just two minutes of departure, at 1:40 PM, the aircraft lost control and crashed near Meghaninagar, a densely populated region of the city. Witnesses reported a loud explosion followed by a massive plume of black smoke visible from several kilometers away.

Passengers from Multiple Nationalities Aboard

The ill-fated aircraft carried passengers from different nationalities. Official sources confirmed that the passenger list included:

  • 169 Indian nationals

  • 53 British citizens

  • 7 Portuguese nationals

  • 1 Canadian citizen

This has raised international concern, and embassies of the respective countries have been alerted. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating with foreign missions to assist families and provide information about their nationals.

Emergency Response and Rescue Operations

As soon as the  today was reported, emergency services were activated. The Ahmedabad Fire Department dispatched seven fire engines to the crash site. Firefighters began battling the intense flames that engulfed the wreckage shortly after the impact.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Border Security Force (BSF) were also deployed for rescue operations. First responders reached the site quickly and began efforts to locate and evacuate survivors, though the full extent of casualties is yet to be confirmed.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has initiated an emergency response mechanism. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are en route to Ahmedabad to oversee the situation and coordinate with local authorities.

Eyewitness Accounts: “It Was a Fireball”

Eyewitnesses near the Meghaninagar crash site described the horrifying scene. Locals reported hearing a loud noise, followed by an explosion. “We saw the plane descending at an unnatural angle, and then it became a fireball as it hit the ground,” said one resident. Several videos recorded by bystanders went viral on , showing thick black smoke rising from the crash site.

Residents in nearby neighborhoods were evacuated as a precaution, and traffic was diverted to facilitate emergency access to the area.

Aircraft Details and Possible Causes

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, reportedly 11 years old, and had been serving Air India’s international routes since its induction. Though technically advanced, the exact cause of the accident remains unknown at this time.

A team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been dispatched to investigate the site. Experts believe that multiple factors—ranging from mechanical failure to possible bird strike—will be investigated. The black box and flight data recorder will play a crucial role in uncovering the truth behind this tragedy.

Civil Aviation Ministry Holds Emergency Meeting

Following the incident, the Ministry of Civil Aviation convened an emergency meeting in . High-ranking officials, including aviation safety experts, are coordinating with Air India and local authorities to manage the situation and ensure transparency in investigation.

Minister Ram Mohan Naidu issued a brief statement expressing deep concern and condolences. He assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to rescue survivors and assist families of the victims.

Political and Public Reactions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu expressed grief over the incident, calling it a national tragedy. Condolences have poured in from political leaders, civil society, and international representatives.

The tragedy is likely to raise new concerns about aviation safety standards in India, especially concerning aircraft maintenance, pilot training, and emergency preparedness at major airports.

Search for Survivors Continues

As rescue efforts continue into the evening, casualty figures are expected to rise. Hospitals in Ahmedabad have been put on high alert, and medical teams are on standby to treat the injured. Helplines have been activated by Air India to assist the families of those onboard.

The Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad is one of the worst aviation disasters India has seen in recent years. As investigations begin and emergency operations continue, the priority remains on saving lives and bringing clarity to this tragic incident.
